There have been many new milestones that we've been blessed to experience this year with our first litter. First puppy being born into Audrey's hands, first growls, first steps, and first to fly the nest.
We grew both of our girls out with the intent of keeping just one. I knew that was a slippery slope. One misstep and there would be two keepers! I had it in my head: When the girls turned + 6 months, I would have a CLEAR keeper. Guess what. That was not the case.
I had received a message from an amazing family I had met 8 years ago at a dog show. I met them at The CalExpo in Sacramento, which brought in non-show families to come meet some cool new breeds. They were interested in meeting whippets. We kept in touch, and this family became a whippet home <3
In their message, they let me know they had recently lost a pet and were looking for a companion for their male whippet. I mentioned that I wasn't sure which puppy would be available, but if they were interested in waiting until after April, I would reach back out. In my mind, I would take the two girls to the National and could decide then (they would be about 8 months by then). I should know by now that this is not how life works. My thoughts kept going back to this family, and how PERFECT they were. They're an active family with TWO teenagers to love on and spoil one of the girls. It took a couple of weeks, but Audrey and I finally made our decision. Calypso would be joining their clan.
I went in with a mix of emotions, not knowing how the placement would hit me. Would I cry? Would I regret the move? Neither of those things happened.
The family came over to meet Calypso, and they brought their other whippet. The look of joy on their faces let us know that the right home was put in our path. Calypso gravitated right to them like a little magnet. They went home with their new family member that afternoon. It was a match made in heaven! She has been in her new home for just over a week, and it's like she was never not there. She's fully integrated and has made her throne on the couch with her people. I LOVE getting their messages with photo updates of Calypso in her wonderful new life. I couldn't imagine there being a better home.
They told me that Calypso makes them laugh and smile all day and all night. You know ... THAT IS WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT. This is WHY I decided to move forward with a breeding program. Just as whippets bring me and my family all the joy in the world, how amazing is it that I can help fulfill that in someone's life? It's the best feeling in the world <3 Joy really does come in white and red brindle (and every other color!!)
